Letter to alderman and one reply

This is what I wrote and sent to all the aldermen.

After sending this I got an email from Mr. Mark Boyle, Asst. General
Manager for Development at the MBTA. He said that the City of Newton
had asked for this development. If so, we need to find and publicly
pressure all the parties involved to retract that request. I am not
in a position to do much except write letters, so anyone with further
information please pass it on.

After posting this to the NLF mailing list, I got a one-line content-free
response from an alderman saying there were benefits. If that person cannot substantiate any, I will publicize the fact.

Dear Alderman xxx.

I am outraged that the City of Newton has not spoken and acted firmly
against the very disruptive development planned for the Riverside Station
location. It would have many bad effects on the city and the region because
it would seriously degrade public transit for years and force many people
to drive through the city. This would hurt the regional economy badly.

The developers want to funnel thousands of cars a day through Lower Falls.
The state is building sound blocking barriers between Waban and Rt. 95.
Why should Lower Falls be a dumping ground for traffic while Waban is being protected?
This is completely unfair.

The development would effectively block Grove St. between Lower Falls and Auburndale, splitting the village from the rest of Newton.

There are many large office and apartment buildings in the area which have ample
vacant space. There is no need for the development.

The city will lose far more money through indirect and direct costs than it will ever get in tax revenue.

The lease on the site was an act of an incompetent and unelected MBTA board in its dying days. It can and must be broken or renegotiated for a more suitable location. Please act immediately to ensure no development takes place at Riverside.

The RSNC was formed to represent the local communities, to give you a voice and a seat at the table. As we move through this process, we'd like to hear from as many people as possible. The more we hear from all of you, the better we are able to represent you.

* What are your thoughts on this development project?
* What questions to we need answered by the developer or by the City?
* What issues need to be raised?

The three local community organizations gathered a lot of information from their members to create position papers which were given to the developer. That, however, was two years ago. We now have more information on what the developer would like to build.

Let us know what you think. Register on this site and use this forum for discussion. Encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same!

Posted on behalf of MIRABEL04@AOL.COM

Has anyone raised the issue of how this development will impact our sewer system? During a rain event, sewerage is pouring into people's homes, Lyons Field and being pumped into the Charles River. I can only assume this development would increase the stress on the system. I would appreciate your comments.
